The implementation of carbon markets and Article 6 play a crucial role in enabling governments and the private sector to meet the commitments of zero emissions or carbon neutrality by 2050, as proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In this sense, the implementation of activities to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and/or increase carbon sequestration has the potential to generate social and environmental benefits that go beyond the reduction of GHG emissions for the sale of units in carbon markets.
However, while carbon markets have the potential to be an effective tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, emission reduction projects and/or increased carbon absorption also present some important environmental and social risks, which must be taken into account when developing public policies and promoting the use of these types of mechanisms.
For these reasons, we invite you to participate in the meeting on the implementation of Carbon Markets and Article 6 in the Latin America and Caribbean region, which aims to:
- Improve knowledge about carbon markets, Article 6, and their implementation in the region.
- Understand the potential benefits and risks associated with the implementation of emission reduction projects or increased carbon absorption and the use of carbon markets.
- Discuss the challenges that the region faces in ensuring an ambitious, fair, and transparent implementation of carbon markets and Article 6.
- Learn about lessons learned and showcase the progress of the region in this matter.
To this end, this event will consist of three parts: a) a training session on the basics of carbon markets and Article 6, b) a panel discussion with expert panelists on carbon markets from different organizations, c) a question and answer session.
